What is your idea about oral health? Is it only how straight your teeth are or how shining your smile is. Then you are having a wrong notion about oral health. It also includes how healthy your gums are. You may not be having cavities and your smile may be shining but that does not mean that you have a healthy gum. As diseases associated with gum are painless people do not understand that they have an unhealthy gum.

What are gum diseases then? This disease starts with a buildup of plaque under or along the gums. According to Mark Ryder, DMD, Chairman of Periodontology, University of California, unhealthy gums starts from the areas where our brushes do not reach. As the disease increases if not treated then it turns into Periodontitis. This causes damage to the bones and to the teeth. According to American Dental Association the signs that will make you aware that you are having a gum disease are:

  • Having constant bad taste or smelling breath
  • Bleeding or swelling of gums
  • Gums that are pulled away from teeth.

If you do not want to have these problems then you need to keep your gums healthy. According to research done, it is known to us that it is easy to have healthy gums by growing certain habits. 6 Ways to Get Healthy Gums


According to ADA one should floss twice daily. This will help to take out the food particles that are stuck in areas where our toothbrush cannot reach. It is not necessary to maintain a time but one must ensure that the process is done twice in a day.

Dental Cleaning

One must ensure that they visit the dentist at least twice a year. This is for the reason that the doctors are well equipped to detect the signs of early unhealthy gum and can advise to take preventive means. They can also assist to clean tartar or any plaque that is formed so that they do not lead to unhealthy gum condition.

Avoid smoking

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention smoking makes our immune system weak and makes the gums more susceptible to diseases. If the gum is already having some problems smoking aggravates it and poses a problem to have healthy gum.

Proper Brushing

It is required that one brushes their teeth twice daily. This will help to clear the food particles and plaque from in between the teeth and gums. Necessary scrubbing of the tongue is necessary as it may also harbor bacteria. The choice of brushes must be such that it is soft- headed and they must be changed every 3-4 months or as the bristles fray out. One can use electric brush also which enables more proper cleaning than normal brushes.

Fluoride Toothpaste

It is to be made sure that the toothpaste that one uses has fluoride and is accepted by ADA. Fluoride helps to have healthy gums and teeth.

Therapeutic Mouthwash

According to ADA these therapeutic mouthwashes helps to lessen plaques, avoid and diminish gingivitis, and decrease the spread of tartar. The rise also helps to flush out food particles and other debris from the mouth. It should also be kept in mind that the mouthwash has the ADA seal.

One can follow these ways of having a healthy gum but they should not forget to consult their dentist if they have any problem with their gum.
